Home:  Science Dept:  Hydroponics:

Hydroponics is the science of growing plants in an intensive form of agriculture that uses artificial substrates such as ceramic chips, stone, or even water in place of the dirt that you would have in a garden.

Nutrients are typically applied via running water, sprayed water or water that is cycled to flood the roots and then recede.  The latter being referred to as an Ebb and Flow system.
